History of the Mask

ABOUT:

This piece was produced as part of a group project for my radio and podcasting group where we were asked to create a piece that was a human interest piece and included interviews as well as sound from outside sources to air on WNSR, The New School’s radio station.

THE PROCESS:

This piece covers the history of the mask in performance up until the modern day use of the mask for COVID-19 safety protocol and how it impacted students in the performing arts department. I pitched the idea, wrote the script, sourced outside sound, conducted two of the interviews, contributed voice-over talent, and assisted in editing the final piece.

Despite its evolution over time, theater has played an important role throughout human history. One important aspect that can be traced across cultures and various times in history is the mask. From the tragedies and comedies of ancient Greek amphitheaters, to the rich tradition of Japanese Noh, to the explosive popularity of theater during Elizabethan England the mask has prevailed as a significant accessory in story telling and symbolism. However, in 2020 the mask’s relevance took a wild turn with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic that has marked a new chapter in its long standing relationship with live theater.
